INCIDENT/CRIME TRENDS

In June, there was a sharp increase in cases of robbery by gangs planting nails on the Naro Moru – Kiganjo highway. One of these robberies resulted in the death of a victim and one included a case of rape.

Rape

  1. On 16th June 2015 at 2330hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a call from the Gaturiri Sub-location assistant chief reporting a case of rape. On arrival, the team found that a male suspect had raped the assistant chief’s mentally ill wife. The suspect had fled on realizing that he had been spotted by members of the community. The patrol team managed to arrest the suspect and escort him to Naro Moru Police Station where he was locked up. The woman was taken to Naro Moru Health Center for treatment.

Robbery (Nail Planting)

  1. On 7th June 2015 at 2330hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a call from a manager at a fuel station in Naro Moru reporting a case of robbery along the Naro Moru – Kiganjo highway. On arrival, the team found that a lorry had developed a wheel puncture as a result of nail planting. The driver and conductor were attacked by a gang of six suspects as they were changing the wheel. The two escaped but the suspects caught the lady and forced her into the bush where they raped her and robbed her of her phone, money and jacket. The patrol team searched the area and found the woman in the bushes and rushed her to Naro Moru Health Center. The suspects had however escaped. Investigations are ongoing.
  1. On 8th June 2015 at 0450hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a scene of robbery near a petrol station along the Naro Moru – Kiganjo highway. On arrival, the team found that a lorry had developed a puncture and as the crew were changing the wheel, they were attacked by unknown suspects. One crew member was badly injured on the head and his phone and KShs 24,600 stolen. No recovery or arrest was made. Investigations are ongoing.
  1. On 11th June 2015 at 2352hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a scene of highway robbery near a petrol station along the Naro-Moru – Kiganjo Highway. On arrival, the team found that four unknown suspects had planted nails on the road causing a puncture on the wheel of a trailer truck. They then attacked and injured the driver stealing from him a phone worth KShs 50,000 and KShs 3,000 in cash before escaping. The patrol team searched the area but no arrest was made.
  1. On 18th June 2015 at 0120hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a scene of robbery with violence along the Nanyuki – Naro Moru highway at Burguret Center. On arrival, the team found that a lorry had a puncture caused by nail planting and as the crew were changing the wheel, they were attacked by a gang of about 10 suspects. The driver was hit on the head with a crude weapon and died on the spot. Another crew member from a second lorry that was together with the first was also hit on the head causing him serious injury as he tried to rescue his colleague. He was rushed to Nanyuki Hospital by the patrol vehicle. The body of the deceased was taken to Nanyuki Mortuary by a police vehicle.
  1. On 20th June 2015 at 2030hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to the scene of nail planting near National Oil Petrol Station along the Naro Moru – Kiganjo highway. On arrival, the team found that a saloon car had had both of its left hand side tires punctured by nails planted on the road. The driver had however driven away with the flat tires to avoid attack. The team patrolled the area and left it calm.

Theft

  1. On 3rd June 2015 at 1800hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a call from a sponsor at Burguret reporting a case of a theft. On arrival, the team found that two suspects had stolen a phone worth KShs 18,000 from a patron in a bar. A fight had ensued whereupon the suspects fled aboard a boda-boda after dropping the phone. The patrol team trailed the suspects and managed to arrest one suspect and escort him to Naro Moru Police Station for interrogation.
  1. On 11th June 2015 at 0830hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a call from OCS Naro Moru to respond to a scene of theft at a secondary school in Aguthi. On arrival, the team found that three pupils from a nearby primary school had broken into students lockers and stolen seven scientific calculators. They were summoned together with their parents to the police station. The issue was resolved and the parents committed to pay for the stolen calculators.
  1. On 13th June 2015 at 2210hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a scene of theft at Giachuma. On arrival. The team found that a motorcycle had been stolen while parked outside. The owner had found out about the theft later. The patrol team searched the area but no recovery was made.
  1. On 17th June 2015 at 0805hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP arrested two suspects at Solio Village 7 who had been accused of stealing sheep. They were escorted to Naro Moru Police Station for interrogation.
  1. On 17th June 2015 at 1555hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a security guard at a farm reporting a case of theft. On arrival, the team found that a suspect had been caught with three hens he had stolen from a farm worker. The suspect was arrested and he directed the patrol team to where he had sold the chickens. The hens were recovered and the suspect escorted to Naro Moru Police Station.

Attempted Theft

  1. On 20th June 2015 at 2100hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a call from a security guard at a hotel reporting attempted theft. On arrival, the team found that a suspect was being held after being caught attempting to gain entry into the compound through the fence. The suspect was arrested and escorted to Naro Moru Police Station for interrogation.

Fraud

  1. On 22nd June 2015 at 1840hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a scene of fraud at Ichuga. On arrival, the team found that unknown suspects had been operating a phony orphanage under the name Lulu Africa Group which was not registered and hence was an illegal activity. They had also tried to con a man of KShs 460,000. The matter was reported to the OCS Naro Moru. The suspects managed to escape but investigations are ongoing.

Accidents

  1. On 18th June 2015 at 1200hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a scene of a non-fatal road accident along Nanyuki, Naro Moru highway. On arrival, the team found that a Toyota SUV had hit a Tata tipper on the side while trying to overtake. A female passenger in the SUV sustained minor neck injury and was rushed to Cottage Hospital by the patrol vehicle. The damaged vehicles were towed to Naro Moru Police Station.

Other Incidents

  1. On 6th June 2015 at 0230hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP under instruction from the OCS Naro Moru took a victim of abduction to Nanyuki Hospital. The victim had been lured from Nanyuki to Naro Moru on the promise of a business deal where he would supply electrical goods to a construction site. He was abducted by two unknown suspects upon arrival in Naro Moru and later robbed of his phone, some clothes and KShs 8,000 in cash. He was rescued by security guards from a nearby farm before reporting to Naro Moru Police Station
  1. On 18th June 2015 at 1058hrs, The Kenya Police and NMBCP responded to a call from community members at Burguret Center to collect a suspect. On arrival, the team found that the community members were holding a suspect who had an injury on his forehead and his clothes had blood stains. They suspected him to be a member of the gang that had attacked and killed a driver the previous night. The suspect was arrested and escorted to Naro Moru Police Station for interrogations.

Mobile Patrols

In this period, NMBCP and The Kenya Police carried out 22 night and 1 day patrols. Areas patrolled included Karicheni, Gatuamba, Thung’ari, Huhoini, Aguthi, Nyang’e, Solio Village 3, 6, 2, Kahuho, Kakurate, Route, Rongai, Kiambuthia, Irigithathi, Mugunyu, Mung’etho, Shalom School, Munyaka Girls, Lenana, Ndiriti, Gatune, Mwichuiri, Kariokor, Anitz’s, Kabati, Gitero, Mureru, Kwa Makara, Green Estate, Naro Moru, Royal Cottage, Tambuzi, Solio Gardens, Kiboya, Gatuanyaga, Airstrip, Jogi, Ngarariga, Ragati, Kaaga, Mlimani, Equator, Silent Valley, Kwa Huku, Gathiuru, Mutamaiyu, Ichuga, Swara, Tamtrout and along the Nanyuki-Kiganjo Highway.
